Otters swim in it happy and safe.
The short course of clear water, which gurgles among thick evergreen vegetation that is still wild, is a favorable and ideal environment for them, apart from one drawback: the impossibility of catching their favorite food from it. Yes, because despite the salubrity of the waters which attract many species of birds, the Grassano is not populated by fish. Too low for their survival is its temperature, just nine degrees, which is kept from the springs to the confluence in the Calore Irpino. That great river welcomes it just a short distance from the valuable natural oasis in the Telesina Valley.
The short course of the Rio Grassano is all enclosed in that park, which bears its name. The fresh waters, rare in Italy and noted for their particularity as early as the sixteenth century, gush out rich in minerals from the belly of Mount Pugliano and arrive from the eastern slopes of the Matese, of which the high ground of the Telesina Valley is an offshoot. The oasis is an uncontaminated place of great beauty, where the abundance of water favors the growth of large willows, poplars, lime trees and reeds, as well as a luxuriant undergrowth. Which they enjoy, together with the otters, white geese, ducks and many other species of birds.
Heritage of the Municipality of San Salvatore Telesino, the park is accessible free of charge to the public of enthusiasts who want to experience direct and regenerating contact with nature. In fact, if the Grassano can be traveled by canoe and kayak, on land the paths lend themselves to pleasant walks on foot or on horseback, with ponies available for children. There is no shortage of areas equipped for picnics and other useful services to complete a welcome that is also suitable for families
