Athenaeus, the Greeks called him, who adored the goddess Athena there in a temple whose foundation legend attributed to Ulysses.
And later, even the Romans honored Minerva there, when they stole the promontory that closes the chain of the Lattari Mountains in the Sorrento peninsula from the Samnites. Ancient place of worship overlooking the sea, Punta Campanella overlooks the island of Capri, beyond the Bocca Piccola. Its strategic position north of the Gulf of Salerno, precious since ancient times for sightings at sea, was used for the construction of a tower, the Torre di Minerva, by King Robert of Anjou in 1334. Rebuilt in 1566, it signaled pirate ships with a bell to nearby populations and other watchtowers located along the coast.
Included in the territories of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense on the Sorrento Coast and Positano on the Amalfi Coast, the promontory is part of the Protected Marine Natural Area of Punta Campanella with its sea.
