Along the main street of Forio, the Pontifical Basilica of Santa Maria di Loreto with the Oratory of the Assunta is full of surprises of all kinds.
It is the mother church of Forio. Heart of the cult in honor of the town's patron saint San Vito martyr, elevated to pontifical basilica on 28 July 1989. The largest church in the diocese of Ischia, with which it shares a thousand-year history.
In the centre of Lacco Ameno, there is a sacred area, recognized and frequented by believers from every part of the island, since the time of Pithecussai.
Next to the tallest and most imposing building of the ancient Franciscan convent, formerly the town hall, and the church of San Francesco, it risks, if not going unnoticed, then not being considered among the unmissable places on the island.
It all started with the decision to change a floor. Ruined and dangerous for the inhabitants of the Ciglio and the many faithful, who from other areas of the island go up to the slopes of Epomeo, to honor San Ciro, whose cult has been rooted in that place for over a century.
Originally, on the side of the green hill overlooking the bay of Sant'Angelo, stood the small church of Santa Maria a Terra.
A natural terrace overlooking the sea and the horizon, where the Pontine Islands stand out in the distance.
