"It's just a stone quarry", was the comment full of amazement and disappointment of Laurence Olivier, the closest friend. In front of that barren gorge surrounded by high walls of volcanic rock, William and Susana's choice to sink the roots that they had decided to put on the island right there was completely incomprehensible to him.

On the road that leads to Forio, a stop at the La Mortella Gardens is a must, among the ten most beautiful in Italy and Europe.
award-winning casket of perfect harmony between the Mediterranean flora and the hundreds of species of plants of the most varied origins, in particular from tropical areas.

A true work of art, the lush and flowery La Mortella Gardens, created by the fertility of the volcanic soil, the ideal climate and the passion of Lady Susana Walton, wife of Sir William, the greatest British composer of the twentieth century, who in 1956 chose the his residence in Forio as a retreat and source of inspiration.

Initially created on a project by the great landscape architect Russell Page, the original valley garden was expanded and shaped by Lady Susana with countless collections of rare and extremely rare plants, which are today part of an intriguing sensory journey, completed by the Mediterranean gardens on the crags of the hill from which you can admire the panorama of the sea and the coast of Forio. An unmissable natural oasis, the summer scene of an intense season of concerts by young musicians followed and promoted by the Walton Foundation, which preserves and keeps alive the musical legacy of Sir William and the botanical legacy of Lady Susana.
