The ancient name of Irpinia identifies the province of Avellino, established in 1860, landlocked and bordering Puglia and Basilicata, with the provinces of Benevento and Salerno and the Metropolitan City of Naples. Its territory, which extends for 2,806 square kilometres, includes 118 Municipalities. It can be reached by railway, Napoli-Foggia line.
