103 kilometers in eight stages
From the Municipality of Sapri, departure of the first stage up to Torraca, introduced in 2021, to the eighth that ends back on the sea, in Palinuro, in the Municipality of Centola, after passing through 14 villages, each with an important history, a valuable archaeological and artistic heritage and naturalistic peculiarities of considerable interest. A route in the heart of the Byzantine Cilento connected to the Nilian Way, which from Rossano Calabro, the birthplace of St. Nilus, leads to the Exarchic Monastery of St. Mary of Grottaferrata, which he founded on the outskirts of Rome, where almost a hundred years old he found death. The Way, with its stages, evokes decisive moments in the life of Nicholas Malèinos, who lived between the fourth and fifth centuries, a disciple of the hierarch John Chrysostom, who took the name Nilus of Ancyra known as the Sinaite, preserving as a sign of continuity in the new name part of his original name, when he became a monk in San Nazario, a hamlet of San Mauro la Bruca, in whose territory Cape Palinuro is included. The itinerary, which retraces St. Nilus' journey to Latium, connects, through ancient paths, the places in Cilento linked to the presence since the 7th century of Italo-Greek monks and the Byzantine rites they spread among the local populations, of whose religiosity they became an integral part and still largely alive today.
