The pre-Roman megalithic walls were originally known to be from the hamlet of S. Eramo, in the territory of Pietravairano.
But the archaeological jewel is located on Mount S. Nicola at around 400 meters in height: a theater and a temple, parts of the same spectacular and impressive architectural complex, result of a unitary project. Located on two terraces on the hill, connected to each other so as to visually represent a unicum, but placed at different heights, the large theater is located lower than the temple that overlooks it.
For the construction of the large theater, capable of accommodating several hundred spectators, the natural slope of the hill was exploited: the scene develops along the southern edge of the terrace and the four circular buttresses of the structure are clearly visible. On the terrace immediately above, the remains of a rectangular-plan temple in Tuscan style stand out, equipped with a four-columned “pronao”, leading to three cells in which the statues of the divinity were likely to be found. The sacred building was equipped with two rainwater tanks, of which only the eastern one remains. Above the temple, moreover, the contemporary remains of a watchtower have come to light, near which burials have emerged that have allowed the complex of buildings to be dated to the 2nd century AD.
