From its position, on the slopes of the Trebulani mountains, the castle of Alvignano, the ancient Cubulteria, dominates the entire valley of the middle Volturno. The original structure, dating back to the 11th century, had probably incorporated a pre-existing square tower.
Norman fortress first, then Angevin, it underwent a first enlargement in 1282. But it was the Aragonese who gave it the appearance it still retains today. With its four circular towers located in the corners, one of which, the most imposing, also working as keep. Feud of some families of ancient lineage, such as the Origlia, the De Clavellis and the dukes Gaetani of Laurenzana, it was abandoned in the 15th century following the damage caused by a seismic event. Even if nature has taken over much of the site, the Aragonese Castle retains the mighty walls, the four towers and, inside, the two courtyards, the kitchens, some warehouses and the residential area.
