Sarno is geographically part of the Agro Nocerian-Sarnian area; it develops in the foothills of the Saro and on the banks of the Sarno river, from which the name of the city is taken. The waters of its river have made possibile for many civilizations over the millennia to settle in the homonymous valley.
This time, we will focus on Mount Saro, which offers magnificent hiking trails of different difficulties.
The path we will take starts from Pian della Colla, the saddle that connects Mount Saretto (the hill behind the city that houses the hamlet Terravecchia with its millenary history of Longobard origin) to Mount Saro. Once taken the path, breathtaking and wild views will open up, far from the chaos of the city. In fact, it will not be hard to spot wondering animals.
On the way we will encounter vegetation typical of the Mediterranean scrub: holm oaks, gorse, rock rose, holly, euphorbia, stone pine and Aleppo groves.
There will be exciting panoramic stops with views over the Vesuvius, the Lattari Mountains, the Picentini Mountains, the Agro Nocerian-Sarnian and the gulfs of Castellamare and Capri.
Step by step, the path will become wilder and wilder; we will cross impluviums and we will walk on an earthy and rocky bottom, until we reach the cave of Santa Lucia, a natural cavity of karst origin, inside which we can admire the ruins of a rock church dating back to the 14th century.
It is exciting to think that the path we will take for leisure or to appreciate the beauty of nature, was once, more precisely up to the 18th century, nothing more than a scenario of daily life for most of the locals, who used the path to reach the church of Santa Lucia for its religious services.
