At the beginning, when it was opened to the public in 1931, it was called "Parco della Vittoria" (the "Victory Park") or "della Bellezza" ("of the Beauty"), and then became Park of Remembrance in honor of the fallen of the First World War.
Today known ad Virgilian Park, in honor of the Latin poet, it is located on Posilipo tuff promontory, above the Seiano Grotto, which leads to the Archaeological Park of Posillipo or of Pausilypon with the 1st century Roman villa. A green oasis overlooking the dream panorama we can admire from the Neapolitan hill. The gaze sweeps from one end of the Gulf of Naples to the other, embracing to the south the Sorrentine Peninsula with Capri, then the unmissable shape of Vesuvius which is the background of the postcard of the city and again the coast of Posillipo and the beachfront of Coroglio and, to the north, the Phlegraean littoral with the Gulf of Pozzuoli up to Capo Miseno and the Phlegraean Islands, from the nearer Nisida, to Procida, to the profile behind the Epomeo and the hills of Ischia. All the places special to travelers of the Grand Tour and for this reason, as a literary park, it is dedicated to the “Naples of the Grand Tour ” and to the travel impressions of the many visitors from Northern Europe.
Placed on several terraces, all of them panoramic, the parks has a luxuriant mediterranean vegetation, with holm oaks, olive trees, downy oaks and typical shrubs of the scrub: myrtle, phillyrea, mastic and fragrant plants. In the park there are play areas for children, a theatre, a sports facility with a football pitch and an athletics track, bars and kiosks.
