Ascending from Vico Equense or from Castellammare di Stabia (even with the cable car) you can reach Monte Faito (1131 meters), which takes its name from the dense beech woods, which cover its sides with ancient trees of some centuries ago.
It was the quantity of wood from the forests which inspired the decision of king Ferdinand I of Bourbon to found in 1783 the shipyard of Castellamare. On the Faito the production of ice was developed, obtained by keeping in the natural trench the winter snow, which in summer was used to preserve food, where it was arriving with a cableway up to Vico Equense, in order to be then transported with tanks to Naples. In the vicinity of the place where, in the 6th century, the archangel Michael appeared to the Saint Catello and Antonino while they were praying, there is the new sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel.
