Nestled between the Gulf of Naples to the northwest and the Gulf of Salerno to the south, the chain of the Lattari Mounts extends for 34 kilometers as a continuation of Picentini Mounts and forms, extending into the sea, the Sorrentine Peninsula.
Of calcareous nature, on the southern side it has high cliffs overlooking the sea at the Amalfi Coast. The highest peaks rise in its central part: with its 1444 meters, San Michele Mount stands. This mount, with Monte di Mezzo and Monte Catiello, is part of the Monte Sant'Angelo a Tre Pizzi group.
To the north Mount Faito stands on which the cable car from Castellammare di Stabia leaves. To the west, mount Cerreto reaches 1316 meters, to the east mount Albini stands out on the panorama of Nocera Inferiore and further to the east there are mount Sant’Angelo di Cava of 1130 meters, the Monte Finestra of 1138 and 1014 meters the mount of Avvocata at the foot of which Maiori rises. The Lattari mounts are named after the milk of cows, goats and sheep finding abundant pastures there, the Lattari are crossed by various paths of great natural beauty, including the famous “Sentiero degli Dei” (“Path of the Gods”) (Italian Alpine Club n.327).
The Lattari mounts are protected since 2003 by a regional park including the territory of 27 municipalities of the Sorrentine Coast and Amalfi Coast.
