It is one of the favourite stopping points in the long spring migration from Africa to Central Eastern Europe on the Tyrrhenian route.

And it also offers favorable conditions to spend winter safely. Together with many other birds which occupy it permanently to reproduce and raise the new generations. The Oasi dei Variconi is a real birdlife paradise, a humid area on the left of the mouth of the Volturno and near the sea, from which it is separated by a beach, in the municipality of Castelvolturno.

Two brackish ponds connected by canals to each other and at the mouth of the great river, sixty kilometers of coastline in the centre of the Mediterranean: the Oasi dei Variconi is a favorable habitat for the passage and the stop, even permanent, of 250 species of birds with the most varied characteristics and origins. Particularly: neddicky, blackcaps, moustached warbler, small, Sardinian warbler, robin, stonechat, whinchat, nightingale, herons, mallards, grebes, little grebes. In a wild environment , where it is not rare to see also buffalo grazing, at a short distance from the historic centre of Castelvolturno.

The oasis is part of the Natural Reserve Foce Volturno and Costa di Licola since the 90s. Equipped with boardwalks and sighting huts, the oasis has become the first birdwatching itinerary in a Southern natural reserve.
