The peak of Mount Miletto is reflecting in its placid waters where they come from.
The Matese Lake, at 1014 meters, is Italy highest karst lake, located in the heart of the homonymous mountain, at the foot of the two highest peaks : the Molise one and the campanian Gallinola. The melting snow of the two mounts is feeding them with some other perennial springs.
An azure splendor surrounded by beautiful beachwoods and with a rich marsh vegetation, the Matese Lake is an area of extraordinary naturalistic value, an ideal habitat of many fish species such as pike, trout, carp, perch and eel. It is also a shelter for different bird species: pochard, coot, mallard, garganey, ferruginous duck, with some white storks.
It falls within the territory of the districts of San Gregorio Armeno and Castello del Matese and in the Park of Matese.
